Susanna Bauer, a German-born artist who has made England her home, was born in 1969 and is often described as “a poet in the woods.” She works with natural dried leaves and crochet, creating an intimate dialogue with nature—a true form of sculpture. The found leaves are repaired, embellished, and combined using hand-made crochet lace, a meticulous traditional technique that relies on tension, directly interacting with the fragile natural material.
There is a delicate balance in her work between fragility and strength; power and delicacy, resilience and vulnerability.
Crocheting on dried leaves is a complex and delicate process.
Once completed, the leaves appear unexpectedly natural in their newfound stability. No visible seams disrupt the integrity of the leaf, as if nature itself had enjoyed experimenting with new forms and playing with the textures created by edges and veins.
